i’m going to let you all in on a mystery that has now plagued our little household for a couple of months. i am very interested and determined to figure this out!
first, some background: when we first moved into our home, the previous owner told us that there was a lemon tree on the side of the house. they had grown it from a seed and then replanted it here when they moved in. in all of the years it had been growing (and it is quite a large tree), no fruit had ever grown on it. tree specialists were brought in with no avail.
well! not long ago we found this:

now this does NOT look like a lemon to me! i know that the lemons/grapefruits/oranges that grow on the trees around here don’t always look like those you buy in the grocery store, but this!? this looks like a grapefruit! and it’s as big as my hand!
is that possible?! can a grapefruit grow on a lemon tree? were the previous owners just pulling our legs? what makes a tree that hasn’t produced fruit in over 10 years all of a sudden give us one? how can we persuade the tree to give us more fruit, now that we know it can!?
hmm.
i suppose we will really find out the true answer when this lovely mystery fruit falls off the tree and we open it up and eat it :)
